flags on 23 feb 2025
On Sunday 23 Feb 2025 Mike and I visited the Marine Corps Museum at Quantico. They had the first flag on display with the second one. I was astonished by the condition of the first flag. Granted it wasn't up very long but they had to carry it up and down that hill.

Re: Military training question
This one isn't about training, but rations, and has some specific components where hopefully some of the Amis, Britischers and the Continentals might be able to assist: 1.) When did the US Army switch over from providing free chow to the men to having them pay for it, even if indirectly? 2.) Was th...

Re: Military training question
I went to basic in 1981, due to prior ROTC training I went thru basic in a fortnight. I then went to Sheppard AFB for aircraft maintenance training for a month...this was basically idiot level training. I then went to a type specific base to learn the aircraft I was to be assigned to this training w...

Re: All US Battleships in a single row December 7th 1941
Not enough room for one. What I've read of the attack plan the torpedo planes were to spread their attack a bit more than they did. With the exception of the Arizona/Vestal all the exposed battle ships were hit by at least 1 torpedo.

love HLC but his history is a little off timelines but essentially correct. I'm of mixed emotions regarding Japan...loved my time on Okinawa, the people there are great, as a people Japanese are worth befriending, but historically their military and methods of fighting leave a great deal to reconsid...

Re: Why did the United States want the Philippines?
The idea of securing the sea lanes to China seems like an argument open to attack. I'm not saying China trade wasn't the reason, but there must have been arguments against it. So I guess what I need to know about is the 1898 Treaty of Paris and the debate leading up to February 6, 1899, when the U....

Re: Where you don't want to see duct tape
speed tape...an aluminum tape that sticks well and is speed resistant...then there was "stronger than God" tape we used on Okinawa this stuff was like duct tape on steroids...when it was finally removed left a god awful residue that never came off.

The worst we tend to get in the UK are grey squirrels (yes the ones from the eastern US) eating at bird feeders. Attempts to make them "squirrel-proof" tend to abjectly fail. State side there is a company that makes squirrel proof feeders that work...the most entertaining one is to long f...

from Air and Space Forces magizine: Miss Buffy.jpg B-52s touch down frequently at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., but the one that landed Sept. 30 looked a little different.
