Overseas – Cyprus
RAF Troödos (Mount Olympus): Type 84, Type 101 radars

1) RAF Ty Croes hosts Strike Command Mobile Radar Reserve.

2) No. 1 ACC a deployable mobile command and control unit, is also responsible for overseas detachments in the Falklands and Cyprus.

Note: All RAF radar units are now mobile, many are sited at locations remote from their operating station. E.g. RAF Neatishead’s T91 is at Trimingham and its T93 at Hopton, both coastal sites. Moving radars to alternative locations is regularly practised. SOC, CRC and CRP accommodations are all now hardened.

Glossary
SOC – Sector Operations Centre
CRC – Control & Reporting Centre
CRP – Control & Reporting Point
RRH – Remote Radar Head – i.e. normally unmanned
OEU – Operational Evaluation Unit

Radar Types in RAF Service

Type 84 – Marconi radar developed as part of the now superseded Linesman/Mediator air defence system. Obsolete, but the cost of removing it from Mount Olympus would be considerable, so it has been left in place. It is usually powered up once a month. When spares finally do run out the RAF will have to bite the bullet regarding demolition and removal.

Type 91 – Marconi S273 – rights to design and upgrade now held by Lockheed Martin.

Type 92
– AN/FPS-117, developed by GE, now Lockheed Martin.

Type 93
– Plessy-ITT AR320

Type 94
– Plessy AR3D

Type 95 – Marconi S259, part of the Mobile Radar Reserve.

Type 96
– Marconi S649

Type 97
– Marconi S600

Type 99
– Westinghouse TPS-43; captured from Argentina in 1982. Assigned to the Mobile Radar Reserve; had been deployed on exercises outside the UK on occasion.

Type 101 – Siemens-Plessey AR327.

Type 102 – Lockheed Martin AN/TPS-77; will be rolled out across the UK to replace the oldest radars in service. The first radar to enter service, at RAF Benbecula, was paid for by a wind fam company, as the radar is less effected by interference from wind turbines.
