If they had the money (not a guarantee), they might buy it if it was contiguous to the ranch.

I'm just wondering how they would've reacted in 1959.

Remember, the Air Farce wasn't especially smart with ICBM basing. They pretty much put a ring of death around Tucson--the 54 missiles were more or less at all points of the compass.

Conversely, the Titan siloes are widely dispersed here in my part of CA. One in the Sutter Buttes, the nearest by Chico.

Back when I was in high school, I had a crush on a young lady whose parents happened to be from Utah (mom was from the Richfield area, dad was from Salt Lake).

I was doing a research paper on the MX basing wars, and said young lady arranged for me to chat with her Mom about local objections to the mobile shelter concept in the Great Basin.

So, she proceeded to park me in the kitchen with a slice of freshly-baked peach pie and a glass of milk, sat down, and proceeded to dish the details.

First, she explained that water was going to be one heck of an issue.

Then she explained that the area is extremely conservative--when she graduated high school and got a scholarship to go to UoU, her father, with a perfectly straight face, warned her that Salt Lake was a den of iniquity. Lots of construction would bring in lots of single young men, and if there was any place on Earth that couldn't handle the social problems caused by 10,000 single young men arriving, it was the Great Basin.

I proceeded to inquire about said social problems, and young lady's mom said that, even though I was a Gentile, I was obviously a fine young lad who would treat her daughter with the respect due her, and regretted that said daughter didn't see my "sweet spirit."

And then the penny dropped, and she told me I was extremely cute when I blushed.

It’s a multi-season TV drama on Paramount+ starring Kevin Costner with two spin-offs: 1883, and 1923 (which stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren).

It’s an interesting counterpoint to what North Dakota did with their shale boom. In both cases, you have a large, well-paid, percieved hard partying, predominantly male population. The big difference may be that most of the drillers are married, and their wives live with the kids back in Texas.

North Dakota was keen to get and keep the drillers, and get them to move from Texas. They saw it as a major opportunity to jump start the state economically, especially the western part.

I’ll just thrown in a recommendation here, there’s a show called Tulsa King from the same showrunner that created the Yellowstone series. Starring Sylvester Stallone as a mobster that just got out of prison and I think it’s quite an enjoyable watch.

Its on Paramount TV, and past seasons are streaming on Peacock. Paramount does "marathons" of past seasons occasionally, usually before the next season starts.
