The B-29's auto-pilot ??

Post by Nik_SpeakerToCats »

As I understand it, B-29s had a simple auto-pilot system, which would let you enter request for a course change and the system would oblige...

( IIRC, this was related to the [CLASSIFIED] 'Norden' bomb-sight, too...)

Now, given the B-29 'twin cabin' was pressurised at altitude, it must fly below that for crew to 'safely' bail out.

Presumably, pilot / co-pilot would then set the controls after the rest were clear, walk-not-run to the exit...

Did auto-pilot include eg a timer to 'scuttle' the aircraft after exit ?
If you cannot see the wood for the trees, deploy LIDAR.

The good news is you can find out.

The bad news is that you have to read this

https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/c ... ual.11002/

Quick flick through, no there are no preprogrammed flight maneuvers or timers.
