Star Cops - Classic BBC sci-fi

Post by Bernard Woolley »

Have recently rediscovered this forgotten gem from 1987, staring David Calder as Nathan Spring, commander of the International Space Police Force. It's been described as 'Bergerac in Space', which I think fits it very well. Being 1987 and BBC sci-fi from the period, the special effects are a little dated, but the writing and performances are top-notch. It certainly deserved more than just 9 (with a 10th cancelled) episodes. Treated properly it could have been a very popular show & a rare example of 'realistic' sci-fi on TV, with no 'bug-eyed monsters' or 'handwavium' technology.

I do smile now when thinking about the fact that Star Cops is set in the 'near-future', of 2027! Although, I'm also a bit sad that we don't have the number of space stations, a Moonbase and Mars colony as depicicted.

If Doctor Who deserved to be brought back with bigger budgets and better special effects, then so does Star Cops.

I would highly recommend checking it out & the entire series can be found on YouTube here.

It was good too and also deserved to have lasted longer.

If we did have a Moonbase, what would its designation be? Say, the first of several planned…

That's what I wish they would do, instead of taking a successful series and just changing a few bits, take a series that had potential, but failed. The BSG reboot is a prime example.

This, in a nutshell. Although I do wish the ending was better; they could have tied it in with Galactica: 1980 somehow.

And will someone turn off that frakkin’ music!
