outlook is notoriously buggy and badly coded, I think I had pretty much identical issue with it yesterday ironically (two instances, as update induced lag of opening 1st instance made me think i didnt open one yet... and then white screen app doom loop as it sees non-completion of log-in from its end, some coder didnt test this basic thing, ridiculous).

Its best to use something simple and proprietary....can be quickly done in any programming language. But then I guess interfacing with other suites installed everywhere in NASA becomes a hassle.

The Office Suite, including Outlook, has become something of the de facto standard across industry and government.

Because of that I’ve used it all for decades simply to be consistent across work and home. It’s become ingrained into my DNA. Bugs and all.

I noticed mine updated itself yesterday. I imagine the challenges of interplanetary updates will become legendary

Short war story. The city IT department pushed out a mandatory update that as soon as one logged in took over the computer for about a half hour. So as we started off a City Council mtg and opened up the laptops for all of the staff presentations…..

My comment that there would be some significant staff changes if that ever happened again were taken to heart (not that I actually had that authority but the message was received)

Gotta love Windows updates! I've had calls from frantic gas passers(Anesthesiologists/CRNAs) that are trying to start an OR case and computer went into an update. We have to tell them that they are stuck, if they try a reboot they could hose the system.

Retired IT. I always wanted people to leave their computers on over night so the MS pushed updates would install over night. It didn't always work. I may have used the dashboard to push updates to people who hadn't rebooted their computers in a few weeks and did a force reboot.

In case of hospitals, I'm surprised the overnight IT shift didn't run updates on computers in ORs scheduled that day. That's assuming they had an overnight IT.

It frustrates me immensely when the work laptop forces an update. I try very hard to budget time as soon as possible when the computer tells me it needs to restart. Hate the damn "Screw you, we're updating NOW!" thing.

Try this, mandatory update to the security suite I was using. Installed it and I couldn't get online. This was before smart phones, and the computer was the only internet connected device I had. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it from the original CD. I didn't update it.

A few days later the mfg. put a noticed saying when the security settings are set to max, it would prevent you from getting on line. Turn down the settings fixed the issue until another update fixed the issues.

I switched security suites that fall.

I've also seen MS updates causing issues.

In case you don't know Microsoft usual updates Tuesdays, it allows corporations to test the update in their environment to see if would cause issues. If it didn't, they could update their systems over the weekend.

Cue mashing of teeth from users who didn't have their systems on over the weekend.

Like a couple of diehard World of Warcraft gamers who 'borrowed' a server and installed WOW on and made a direct link to the outside internet so people could use said server. They did put a wall around the server but.... I've heard that the Security, non-IT, officers went into the offices of the people in question and nearly picked them up out of their chairs to escort them out of the building. A rumor was they also got blackballed in terms of IT jobs.

Well, since it’s been a long time I can provide an anecdote from my high school days. This was in the days of computer labs at schools, rather than individual computers for students. Installing games on the computers was strictly forbidden, and to ensure that this wasn’t possible (for long), there was some software installed which would check the install against a master copy whenever windows rebooted (or something like that, been a while), and wipe anything that had been installed by an ordinary user. Naturally we as students were peeved at this and viewed it as a challenge, so being resourceful teenagers we may (ahem) have managed to acquire the password of the head of IT for the municipality and used his admin access to clandestinely install multiplayer games on all the computers, hidden away pretty deep in the file system. They were still there when I graduated, nobody ever found us out. Nor did the IT head change his password in those years.

When I was at JSC, one computers in our shop was quarantined by NASA for being used by someone as a Napster server. Don't remember what happened to the person.


We also had someone on third used his JSC supplied computer to hack other people. Not sure how much jail time he served.

Back in my early days of client support in 2000ish time period we have Win 95B as our main Desktop image with zero client policies to prevent installs. People would call us up about their computer being slow and we would arrive to troubleshoot and we would watch as they shutdown Napster and all sort of other programs they had installed. I was so thankful when we upgraded to W2000 and actually implemented policies to prevent people from installing whatever they wanted.

Hehe. Well the latest issue seems to have been due to the waste tube freezing up, which was fixed by turning the capsule to heat it up in the sun. They might want to fix that in future flights by installing some heating system though.

Yesterday Trump spoke directly to the Artemis 2 astronauts. I thought it was very well done and Trump had some very relevant questions to ask the astronauts. He seemed really hyped and had a lot of praise for the astronauts including toward Canada and the Canadian astronaut onboard.
