Artificial blood out of Japan
Artificial blood out of Japan
Scientists at Nara medical university in Japan have reportedly developed a sort of artificial blood. It’s made from hemoglobin taken from expired donor blood, and encased in lipid membranes. The blood is said to be able to be given to anyone regardless of blood type, and it lasts a year at room temperature. Preclinical tests in healthy test subjects haven’t shown any issues, and full clinical trials are scheduled for 2026.
Provided that this pans out, that it work as advertised without side effects, it could have a major positive effect in for instance trauma care in both the civilian and military sectors.

Hmm yeah, True Blood did cross my mind as well.

That doesn't answer the big question.
What do vampires thing about the taste and mouthfeel of the artificial blood? Is it palatable, or like the sludge at the bottom of a Navy coffee maker? Would go three towns over to pick up a bottle, or just go down the village at the bottom of the hill for a fresh tap?
These are all important considerations.

20 years from now, they discover that the artificial hemoglobin causes vampire obesity and arterial plaque...
Re: Artificial blood out of Japan
Well, part of the True Blood storyline was that the artificial blood was used as a way for vampires to announce their existence publicly to the world, claiming that they were harmless now that they had a blood substitute to feed on rather than feeding on humans. As it turned out that was in many cases just a ruse though, as the artificial blood wasn’t like the real thing. But if this artificial blood creation in the real world is followed by an announcement that vampires are real I think we can safely say that we’re living in a simulation.
