Tour Portsmouth with Drach

Post by Johnnie Lyle »

If our British members are interested, Drach is doing a guided tour of at least VICTORY and WARRIOR, and maybe even MARY ROSE on November 4: https://www.drachinifel.co.uk/meetingdrach

...Saw that last night on the Akagi video. Victory is on the bucket list; seeing her with Drach would just be icing on the cake.

Victory is great, even more so if you can get the guides alone for a few minutes and get talking to them. But that’s just it…

Within a few hundred yards you have Warrior on you way into the base, then Victory and Mary Rose close to each other (with monitor M33 inbetween), and after you’ve done all of that there’s a harbour tour so one can gawp at the grey war canoes tied up at the jetty.

And then if one drives about 45 miles around the harbour to Gosport (directly opposite HMS ALFRED and the Historic Dockyard) there’s the Submarine Museum, with HMS Alliance, a modernised WW2 A-boat, and a refurbished and now much better-cared-for HMS HOLLAND 1, the RN’s first-ever submarine… which you can get inside. Oh man, the number of innocent ships I sank that da… erm moving on. Then there’s Fort Blockhouse which I think has recently been done up.

(Makes note to reserve several days for these :D )

Have they stopped running the water us from next to the WARRIOR to the Submarine Museum and the Explosion / Coastal Forces Museum?

If they haven’t, there’s no need to drive around the harbour

There was no water bus on when I was there last, which was….. 2 years ago now, but I don’t know if it had just been suspended temporarily or not. I know I was really irritated at having a 5 mile drive around the harbour rather than the 500 yard boat trip I was expecting.
