I guess you’ll have plenty of time to go play golf, then…

Some people in retirement play golf. Some people in semi-retirement fly warbirds. I'm taking Lisa and 512 up to EAA Oshkosh, and we're on tap for Seafair in Seattle next month. Fairchild and Mountain Home come later in August...
The difference between diplomacy and war is this: Diplomacy is the art of telling someone to go to hell so elegantly that they pack for the trip.
War is bringing hell down on that someone.

My wife is about halfway through editing the first draft of her book on Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, as viewed by a professional architect, explaining it to a general audience.

Lots of illustrations and photos, but lots of text as well. It's going to be substantial.

Well, we just met our prospective CC here at Warren today.

One thing about Boss-Ma'am: when your three-star CC has the physique of a very fit 30-year-old, it gets everyone on the staff to step up their game; General Taldren (my immediate boss) has, across the past two years, dropped 30 pounds of swivel-chair spread and picked up a solid ten pounds of muscle mass, and she cuts a much more impressive figure in Combo Ones than when I first reported in. And everyone learned that a sound body leads to a sound mind; work stress is easier to handle, our staff products are better quality, and personal relationships are better.

Seriously, our staff looks sharp.

So, prospective CC arrives and we have a meet and greet.

He's a couple years younger than Boss-Ma'am and me. He's also about 30-40 pounds heavier than I am, and a couple inches shorter.

The room got a bit cooler on both sides of the conversation, if you follow my drift.

I don't think we're going to have as happy a staff as we do now. :|

I will be bailing out of there for SAC HQ about a month after Boss-Ma'am heads off to the Delta Charlie Zone. General Taldren leaves about two weeks later, to be DC/S Logistics at HQ USAF.

The rest of the staff is stuck here until next summer.

I kinda feel sorry for them.

That sounds like a prescription for the destruction of a very good staff.

That’s the Air Force for you, Belushi… not that the rest of the American military is any less guilty of that…

Check with the people who worked for him before. He might surprise you. If not, crunching time.

Hello from EAA Oshkosh! Flew up earlier today from Salt Lake, where the folks at the Salt Lake Aviation/Aerospace College (next door to the UT ANG KC-135 Wing) take good care of 512. There's the usual mix of homebuilt/experimental aircraft, warbirds from both WW II and III, military aircraft, NASA, etc.. One of the expected speakers is General Olds' daughter, who finished a book her dad started, but was unable to finish before he passed. No doubt his WW II and Vietnam experiences will be a hot topic, but curious to see what her dad said in the book about WW III-even if it was mostly behind a desk. Viktor Belenko is here with a homebuilt plane, but has he lost the security detail? Nope: some guys in dark suits with bulges on the left side-which usually signal the presence of weapons, and ray-bans were waiting for him. MAC is here with a C-5M Galaxy II, and some chap with a MiG-21MF who came from Canada. There's some tacair-AF and Navy, and a few helos. Bev Lynne's here with an HH-3E that she flies for a company that works with movie productions-she has flown it in several productions, which is one way to spend time after retirement from the AF... Other than a guy with a Korean War F-86E, we're the only jet warbird from the AF. This time.

And Boss-Ma'am is trolling Finance.

She flew her bizjet to some months ago for a meeting at Los Angeles AFB, flew direct to Torrance because it was extremely last minute and she couldn't get tickets.

She then, after getting yelled at by Los Angeles AFB Finance, filed a travel claim. Basically ate the cost of her jet fuel and tie down.

Finance wanted to see her airline ticket.

She explained that she flew her own jet, and she didn't sell herself a ticket.

Upshot: she eventually submitted a POV mileage claim in accordance with the JTRs.

Finance screamed that a bizjet is not a POV.

She showed them the title, showed them the dictionary definition of "vehicle," and explained that her bizjet is, by definition, a POV, your move, Finance.

20AF staff reaction: we are laughing our asses off.

Normally I say stay on good terms with the money people, but this is an exception.

Reminds me of the time my boss spent 3hrs yelling at payroll for shortchanging me 2hrs of overtime (true story).

Well, the prospective new CC apparently complained to CINCSAC that the entire staff at 20AF is a bunch of gym rats, that he doubted our ability to actually do competent staff work, and he wanted to fire the lot of us as soon as he took command.

CINCSAC, in turn, called CSAF, and they had what Boss-Ma'am likes to call A Crucial Conversation.

CSAF has apparently hung a "HELP WANTED" sign on the 20AF CC billet, and the former prospective CC is putting in his retirement papers.
