You picked the wrong sword!

Yes, we have an official sword for dealing with misbehaving time-travellers. Deal with it.

From what I understand here in Sweden the Herald of the Realm is making a comeback after a ~50 year absense. I insist on him getting the same outfit, and a horse, as in the olden days. :P

The King's Champion will also be taking part in proceedings. That person hasn't had to throw down the gauntlet since 1821 however.

The ones you only has because of our orders for P.14s? The ones the AEF used because you couldn’t make enough M1903s? Those rifles? :D

I always liked the Sword of Temporal Justice the most, for some reason!

A bit uniquely we have royal ”Swords of the Realm” that’s a part of the crown jewels here. Here’s a couple of them.

There are also a fair number of swords associated with the City of London.
  • The Mourning Sword
  • The Pearl Sword
  • The State Sword
  • The Travelling State Sword (made in 1962 because the State Sword is too valuable for it to leave the City of London)
  • The Old Bailey Sword
  • The Mansion House Justice Room Sword
The first one is used at state and ceremonial funerals in the City of London and so featured at the funerals of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher.

I see now that the tabard of this office was red and gold, and that the four orders of chivalry had their own heralds. Are they considering naming the Herald at the Chancery of the Swedish Royal Orders of Knighthood (ordenshärold vid Kungl. Maj:ts Orden) as being also Herald of the Realm, or is the intent to reinstate the Herald of the ReaIm as a separate office?

I think, but this is just a guess as I’ve only seen a single written reference in the new statues (I think it was) for Kungl Maj:ts Orden that the Rikshärold is back, that it’ll be an ex officio position for Överceremonimästaren (Master of Ceremonies) at the royal court. As I understand it this was the case pre-1975. The Rikshärold acted as ordenshärold, and the separate heralds for the orders were done away with in the 19th century.

[Edit] Though thinking a bit more about it, since there is now a separate ordenshärold perhaps rikshärold will in effect be an ex officio position of that individual as you suggested. I guess we’ll see what happens.

I’m not sure we have enough available…!

Side note. I remember armoured stuff & panzery things everywhere in the 90s. Challies, 432s, Warriors, AS90 (and Abbots)… what on Earth was gained from scrapping them? I know I know. Politics. But dammit it’s frustrating.

In Swedish Wikipedia, using a blog entry from the new ordenshärold (Swedish only) as source, it says that while the heralds for the other three orders were vacant since the 19th century and abolished in 1952, the office of herald for the Order of the Seraphim remained in use until the 1974 reforms (though renamed after 1952 to härolder vid Kungl. Maj:ts Orden, pretty much the title held by the current herald of the Royal Orders); the blog entry even says that two heralds were maintained.

Yeah but they were junior ones, or to put it in another way Rikshärolden had some formal responsibilities within the orders, and also during coronations and such. He outranked these lesser ones, you might put it that the Rikshärold was the herald and the others were assistant ones. It’s largely a parallell practice to other existing and discontinued offices within the royal court, you have a senior position held by someone fancy as a part time gig when there’s some big event going on and then you have more junior ones that more or less work full time in those roles. Överceremonimästaren is senior to the ceremonimästare, but only shows up during special occassions, överhovstallmästaren is discontinued and now you just have hovstallmästaren who’s the one that actually does the work anyway.

This has a bit more about it: https://waslingmedia.se/harolder/harold ... sordnarna/

[Edit] I believe the reason why it says ”into the 50’s” at these links for the lesser heralds and Jonas lists people until 1975 probably has to do with the changes Gustav VI Adolf did to the orders and ceremonies in 1952. He wasn’t big on royal pomp and ceremonial stuff at all and my impression is that these lesser heralds were effectively a position on paper after that, rather than something actively utilized.
