...The first weeks of the lockdown were bad enough, but there was something else that gave it an utterly surreal touch.

Just two words.

'Tiger King'.

You may remember that one of the tenets of Joe Exotic's beef with Carole Baskin was the claim that she had been responsible for the disappearance and death of her husband, Don Lewis - a Florida businessman with a penchant for some decidedly hinky businesses. He vanished in 1997, and Joe swears to this day that Baskin killed Lewis and fed him to her tigers. Baskin, in turn swears she had nothing to do with it.

Well, a couple days ago Baskin appeared on the UK's ITV network and claimed that Don was (in 2002) alive and well and living in Costa Rica:

The article explains it better than I can, but let me say this for the record: at least when it comes to Don's disappearance, I am firmly on Team Carole. Lewis knew how to hide money and how to hide, period. He may also have gotten it into his head that Carole was going to try and whack him (a not entirely unreasonable belief, all things considered) and figured that since he was already 'doing business' in Costa Rica, maybe it was time to get down there, lay low, and enjoy the rum and senoritas until it was time to shuffle off this mortal coil. He would have had enough money to live like a king there for a very long time, the authorities would have left him quite alone as long as there was no trouble, and even if Carole did come looking for him he would have had plenty of warning.

That’s the best description I’ve seen of it.

My go: imagine a screaming queer, long-haired gun-toting’ redneck with a penchant for making as much (but surprisingly limited) moolah as possible from keeping big cats and other exotic animals.

Who then got into a feud with another big cat establishment owner, also as decidedly unpleasant as he.

File it under “needs to be seen to be believed, but not enough mind bleach will wipe this one”.
