To be fair a lot of scifi alien invasion stories begin like this. Even War of the Worlds kind follows the concept of asteroids/meteorites falling and then turn out to contain aliens. That looks like its just waiting for the exact right set of circumstances to split open and emit a face eating alien of some sort.
Humor aside, that's a neat find, assuming its actually what its claimed to be. It appears to be very vitrified. I've seen overcooked asphalt samples that looked similar.
