Part of what drove him away was my own personal preference for staying as close to reality as possible within the scenario with regard to ship names…

I think we went with United States for either CVN-74 or CVN-75 (which was actually authorized and laid down under that name)….

Matt, could we possibly use either Saratoga, Kitty Hawk, or Coral Sea for CVN-74?

What about a World War III Naval Battle like Kamthatka, sounds strange but could be used for the America-class Ahp.

Use the name America for the LHA-6 class, as per IRL, and keep the traditional carrier names as carriers…

These are the carriers, both Nimitz and Independence-class ships (The latter is OTL's Ford Class): Gents, please keep in mind that two years ago, when this information was rediscovered and posted, I declared it canon. It was canon when it was originally posted way back when, if you'll recall.

Nimitz (CVN-68) - to retire 2022.
Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) - to retire 2025.
Carl Vinson (CVN-70)
Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) - commissioned 1986.
Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) - commissioned 1989.
George Washington (CVN-73) - commissioned 1992.
America (CVN-74) - commissioned 1995.
United States (CVN-75) - commissioned 1998.
Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) - commissioned 2001.
Midway (CVN-77) - commissioned 2004.
Intrepid (CVN-78) - commissioned 2007.
Kitty Hawk (CVN-79) - commissioned 2010.

Independence class (2+2)

The successor to the Nimitz class in production, two active and more planned.

Independence (CVN-80) - commissioned 2013.
Saratoga (CVN-81) - commissioned 2016.
Coral Sea (CVN-82) - under construction, for completion in 2019.
Enterprise (CVN-83) - under construction, for completion in 2022.
Hornet (CVN-84) - projected, for completion in 2025.

Shangri-La (LHA-8) - commissioned 2009.
Iwo Jima (LHA-9) - commissioned 2011.
Inchon (LHA-10) - commissioned 2013.
Tarawa (LHA-11) - commissioned 2015.
Belleau Wood (LHA-12) - commissioned 2017.

You Think we see at least 1 World War III battle name there among the World War I and II names.

I'm not sure we would.

What were the major US Marine invasions of WWIII?

Iceland
Kola Peninsula raid
Gibraltar? Or was that a mostly Commonwealth invasion force?

Marine actions not involving an invasion -

Lubbock?

I'm sure there's more, but I can't remember them at this point. Someone else can fill in the blanks, I'm sure.

I'm not really sure that the invasions are really worthy of a ship name. How many of the land battles were of a great enough significance to earn a ship named after them?

The Marines are kind of small, so they're not going to be big leaders for battle names. But carriers are traditionally named for famous ships and battles of any service branch, witness Oriskany, Lake Champlain, Saratoga, Yorktown, Monterey, Bataan, etc. I could see Pueblo, Houston, Sabine, Casper, and North Platte being carrier names.

Intrepid would be CVN-85. Nimitz will be CVN-86. Lead ship of an Improved Independence class. The wartime Houston was a 688-class sub.
