Oppenheimer is an outstanding picture. It has my highest possible recommendation. The theatre was utterly silent in the moments after the Trinity test, spellbound. The ending few scenes didn’t pack as much of a punch as Dunkirk’s, but were masterly in their own right; the discussion between Oppenheimer and Einstein was deep and existed on multiple levels, a bit of a take on the quantum theme.

The only thing that could make it better would have been a cameo by Bryan Cranston as Walter Heisenberg. All jokes aside, the casting was seriously well done and deep, with even cameos played to the hilt.

Nolan has always put out *well made* pictures and this is absolutely one of his very best. I’m going to watch it again to fully take it in, the first time I’ve seen a picture more than once at the cinema in 18 years.

However, they did NOT tell me WHICH movie I have to see. They are all going to see Barbie. I am going to see Oppenheimer.

Your review makes me happy. From the previews it did NOT seem like the kind of fluff movie it could have been, but I am glad to have confirmation from a reasonably respected source.

Hey, Barbie’s beach boats make good ersatz amphibious assault craft. So it’s all not totally useless.

I do find the memewars over Barbie, especially the overt woke “girls good, boys bad” and Ken’s subversive “fight the matriarchy” to be legit darkly hilarious.

But, honestly, movie cinema is too damn expensive for pretty much anything to be worth it.

No, it doesn’t, nor does it need to. They seem to be a modern innovation of the childish comic book movies and this picture is the complete antithesis of those; the only time I’ve seen one done well was at the end of The Disaster Artist, which was a comedy.

Saw it last Sunday. The three hours went past really quickly. There was just enough technical stuff about The Gadget without getting bogged down in “Gun Type” and “Implosion Device”. Though I’m sure we’d have all loved that.

While I’m not complaining, I’m not sure that Florence Pugh getting her kit off was really necessary, or drove the plot forward!

IMAX is cool, but the nerd in me appreciates the old school 70 mm format shown (in this case) on two DP70 projectors from 1958, and managed by a technically retired 72 year old operator who held a bit of a lecture on the projectors and format before the showing. Pointed out that it’s the proper classic setup with two projectors and not the later 80’s era setup with one projector and platters which most of the few surviving 70 mm installations in the world use. So I recommend that format.

600 pounds and 11 miles long. That's the film they use in the iMax version. iMax also told Nolan that he had better not go beyond the running time of Oppenheimer because the film is at the limit of what can fit on the reels/trays.

I'm just outside the effects radius for Trinity, but it looks like it should be sufficient. Try not to scale up too much - if you used Castle Bravo I'd get turned into a crispy critter.

That background music was far too loud. There was no need for it, not when it was a dialogue driven film, not an action one.
