We actually did build a single C-130 AWACS using a modified E-2 radome. The EC-130V was a proof of concept for a Coast Guard AWACS. The program didn't go further due to budget cuts.

Re: Latin America in TLW
Seeking opinions / views on Latin America in TLW. Other than the fact that the USSR is still a going concern, how does the continued Cold War affect Latin America? Until 1999, I'm not sure how much changes other than a better armed Cuba with a non-failing economy. On the other hand, might all the Na...

Re: The Last War? : Chapter 388
Well that was a jam packed chapter! Well done. Could you refresh my memory as to where the Canadian Hunters came from? FYI, don't forget that Thule AB in Greenland is in that neck of the woods. It's about 678km from CFS Alert. Resolute Bay is about 1,100km from Alert. Thule might be a better place t...

Re: The Last War? : Chapter 387
I don't really understand your questions - I think that it's a matter of force densities. This place reminds me of northern Australia, big, no infrastructure, bad climate, little population. A battalion AO can be as big as Belgium in northern Australia and this area is no different. In Europe you c...

Re: The Last War? : Chapter 387
How many flo-flos are available by D+14-ish? In South America? No argument on securing Georgetown. Taking a look at a population density map - if you can keep an invader on the western bank of the Essequibo Rover, most of the population of Guyana is safe. But I'm not sure about Georgetown as a logis...

Re: The Last War? : Chapter 387
Commonwealth Battalion Group is a Canadian lead battlegroup made up from Canada Reserve Forces since all of the regulars are in Germany? IIRC, yes. It's in the story. But other than an "Anglo-Belizean composite company" to be attached, I don't recall if the battalion was further fleshed o...

Re: The Last War? : Chapter 387
James, yes the logistics here are 95% of the issue. I'm wondering what % of the army's trucks and tankers are supporting the invasion, and how many of the same have been taken out of the civilian economy. If you look at where Brazil's motorized/mechanized units are based, mostly in the south, the o...

Re: The Last War? : Chapter 387
IIRC, you can bring units by river up to Boa Vista(the Brazilian Army has been doing a lot of exercises involving reinforcement of units in the Amazon recently, and I remember one of those bringing mechanized units to Boa Vista). There was a 'highway' going from Porto Velho to Manaus(BR-319), but w...

Re: The Last War? : Chapter 387
Nobody said all military-political decisions were smart! :D Oh I know. But you know me once I start looking at maps in detail. Sometimes I just have to shake my head and wonder what they were thinking. It has taken the Brazilians a long time to get where they are now. I’ll have to double chec...

Re: The Last War? : Chapter 387
Good chapter! Sorry for the late reply. One thing I have given some thought to though. The whole Venezuela-Guyana-Brazil thing is a little bit of a head scratcher, logistically. Looking at maps of the regions and playing with Google Earth, there aren't any highways between Venezuela and Guyana. Ther...

Re: Benefits of SSNs
Is it possible for ssns to resupply food and rotate people at sea undetected? I think the Chinese have a sub base in Hainan that has an underwater entrance. Are there other such places? The idea being that an ssn remains undetected for years. The Swedes have Muskö Naval Base. As I understand it, th...

Re: C-123 Providers, and AMARC disposal policies in TLW
Have you considered that the A-4 fleet might be suitable for use in secondary theatres to take some of the low-end land-based and even sea-based missions? I am thinking here of two options. Not as many A-4s in AMARC as you might think, or at least the later models. Though as an aside, I do wonder i...

Re: C-123 Providers, and AMARC disposal policies in TLW
So about the idea of F-14s in AMARC. I present the following: A Brief History of the F-14D Acquisition Program Excerpted from Modification Of The F-14: A Case Study In Decisions Affecting A Major Systems Upgrade By Perry J. Delahoussaye March 1994 The original plan called for 304 new production F-14...

Re: Australia Follow-ons
The Philippines AF was flying F-5A/Bs. I'm not sure how much capability you can wring out of an F-5A that date to 1966, even with upgrades. I think that's actually a secondary consideration! The first response has to be to maintain some level of basic capability and the F-5 is really the only possi...

Re: C-123 Providers, and AMARC disposal policies in TLW
What chapter was USS America sunk in? I have not read that one. CHeers: Mark It's Chapter 144 . Another board member, Lordroel, has his own alternate history board and is hosting a TLW archive/backup. He's been reposting older chapters. The Chapter 144 there is an older version and says USS Saratog...

Re: C-123 Providers, and AMARC disposal policies in TLW
Northrop-Grumman Calverton is still going, they're just building F-25s now in TLWverse. A-6G : Like I said, we've got about 300 A-6E to play with. And I'm assuming that as in @, nobody bought them second-hand. The question is how many of those 300 were CILOPed into A-6Gs in the early 1990s? I kind o...

Re: Australia Follow-ons
I don't think that the Malayan orbat was ever posted, James. I think the air force one is the only one ever posted. I've since done the navy, and the army is like 95%. Though finishing the army one requires some high level (Bernard) answers. Once things between Indonesia and Australia go to hell in...

Re: C-123 Providers, and AMARC disposal policies in TLW
One other type of aircraft is going to be coming out, and it'll be the Navy and Marines only: the A-6. I do believe we discussed this on the previous board, but the need for Intruders is going to outpace Grumman's production capacity. The A-6G, which was a proposed alternative to the F in @, envisi...
