Re: Superbowl halftime show

I ended up watching the first couple minutes of the show, realized it wasn't my kind of music, and went and took a nap. I've not liked a halftime show for a decade or so. Do you by any chance find yourself saying that policemen are younger these days? Honestly, no. And I actually quite like t...

Re: The Difference Between Test and Reality....

Underarm is disgraceful? I strongly suspect the skills of practitioners of American Women's Softball would come as a great surprise to the cricketing world. How about submarine pitching? For those of you who are not afficionados of "America's Pastime", that's about 25% of overhand pitching...

Re: The Difference Between Test and Reality....

Another thought to keep in mind.... Its entirely possible the "Test" objects were lovingly hand crafted and assembled by a crew of machinists and scientists who had a vested interest in NOT going to the Eastern Front, and therefore made sure everything was as perfect as they could make it....

My father worked for Bell Labs from 1958 until he retired in 1999. One of the projects he worked on was Nike-Zeus. He would never talk about his work on secret stuff, because he knew how to keep his mouth shut. Its nice to see stuff that he worked on in the public eye now.

OOOoooo, I see some interesting stuff here....

Is this part of a universe you're developing, or is it the logical extension of naval construction in the absence of a general war not starting until the late 40's? Either way, I want more!

Re: Forecast 'Bomb Cyclone'...

Yeah, that was the last time we had a good winter. I remember following a drill rig while we were drilling 350 foot deep monitoring wells. When we got to the rig at 7 AM, it was -10 or so. Warmed up to about 5 or so during the day and dropped again at night.

Winter of 2014/2015.

Is the Hercules gunpowder company not a thing in DE, or are they not large enough to be noted?

Re: Forecast 'Bomb Cyclone'...

Yeah, the storm underwent bombogenesis while it was headed out to sea. The current dome of cold air that's been affecting the NY/NJ area for the last week and a half kept it from snowing on us yesterday. We've not been above freezing by me since.... the 20th? maybe? Today through Wednesday they're t...

Re: Any audiophiles/vinylphiles here?

My younger daughter asked for the Epic soundtrack for Christmas on vinyl.

I have a small collection of mid-80's pop and my parents entire collection of vinyl from the 60's and 70's, which is almost all classical music.

Re: The US accidentally nuked itself....twice, also Greenland

I thought we could use a little more lighthearted stuff on the board lately, this details a B-52s desperate attempt to return to Seymour Johnson (seriously) air base with a leaking fuel take and 2 mark 39 bombs yielding 3.8 megatons. Also dropping nucs on Denmark sovereign soil allready has a prece...

There are some portions of that board that made it onto the archive. However, the cold, hard truth is that our little corner of the internet was not significant enough for the waybackmachine to archice all the little bits.

Re: "ST: Starfleet Academy"....

I'd have thought the proper way to look at it was in relationship to the Age of Sail from the 7 years war to the Napoleanic Wars, where Midshipmen were effectively thrown to the wolves with little to no training, except what they learned while doing. It also fits in with the no FTL communications, w...

Shit... Larsen AND Adams? The world is a much dimmer, less jolly place today. I shall be raising a glass in both their honor later this evensong. And the song shall be a lament. I'm thinking "Adaggio for strings" by Samuel Barber. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izQsgE0L450 Did a vocal ver...

After my time as well, of course. Except that I have three rug rats, and all of them LOVED the series. I can do a pretty good Doofenschmirtz impression, as well!

Spoiler alert: A grieving mother and father whose son succumbed to football related injuries got in touch with a rather powerful and twisted wizard who had his own axe to grind against everyday American society in general. He had previously been approached by some soccer executives in a different c...
