God speed to the crew for a fully successful mission.

The way they handled the cancellation points to kicking Kurtzman off. What they ought to do is find a real fan of the show, and hand it to him. I don't think SA was awful, but they didn't make some of the best storytelling decisions, either. The real impact would have been to have Dax get a bigger ...

Um, given a 'New Yorktown' sounds so much like a 'New York Town', against which current POTUS carries yet-another petulant grudge, not gonna happen. Snark: Of course, could just lay keel as 'Item 2026'. And, by the time some-one gets to swing the bottle of bubble, DJT will be dead, buried and safel...

Re: Immaculate Constellation

The Aliens.gov website is almost certainly about ICE and CBP stuff, not off-planet aliens. The Burchett quote is mostly FUD, because NASA studies all sorts of classified things dealing with aerospace, some of which gets reported as UFOs from the public. Pretty much everything here is rumour mongerin...

Re: 7-Ton Asteroid Enters Earth’s Atmosphere, Explodes, Breaks into Pieces over Cleveland

Not even asteroids want to go to Cleveland.

Guess the old arcade games actually had as use.

Theater command thought it was coming from Iran, and intercepted.

God really hates Cleveland. He doesn't have good aim these days, though.

When is an invasive species not invasive?

So a crawfish species was introduced into Iberia in 1588, and has spread and been adapted to the ecosystem since then. Should it be protected and conserved? Should it be eradicated, like more recent invasive species? What's the proper balance here? Of course, being the EU, there are probably all kin...

Re: The challenges of modern car batteries

To my understanding, there are two types of liquid lead acid batteries in common use. The car or truck starting batteries, and marine/RV deep cycle batteries. Starting batteries have more plates in each cell that are thinner, thus a higher specific surface area and the capability for delivering more...

Interesting. Considering the drop height, I think the CEP for the recon flights may have been optimistic, but I have no data to back up that gut estimate except WWII bomber performance. [OOC: Try explaining your abort to the Bomb Wing Commander...] "Well, it's an exercise and there are safety o...

Re: The challenges of modern car batteries

Yup 49 is a tiny battery for a car. Batteries in general are a problem for OEMs, they are heavy, unreliable, easy to steal, often broken before they get to the factory. Conspiracy theories about deliberately designing the car to be hard to repair are common on the interwebz, I've never heard of a d...

Re: AI resorts to nuclear weapons in 95% of simulations – study

Sounds like a poorly constructed escalation ladder and a bad choice of prompts to me. What's telling is that the LLMs didn't write out capitulation very often. Since this isn't AI, just a big Eliza system, it's up to the person prompting to get the output they want from the thing. Also, they don't k...

The Ars Technica article is better coverage: https://arstechnica.com/staff/2026/02/nasa-shakes-up-its-artemis-program-to-speed-up-lunar-return/?comments-page=1 I haven't heard if the landers are on schedule or not. I'm still betting on Falcon Heavy to get there first. Starship is the wild card. Land...

Re: Solid state battery hits the market

Ouch. That's pretty bad, especially for a 14mm thick cell. Now let's think about getting rid of that sort of heat in a 900mmx700mmx200mm battery package, even with internal liquid cooling passages. Then there's getting rid of all of that heat in the liquid before recirculating it. Something tells me...

Re: Solid state battery hits the market

What about heat generation during charge and discharge? How does it react when put into big packs? At 90% efficiency, that's 30-40 Wh/L that needs to be removed, or enough to cause a Rapid Unscheduled Incendiary Situation if it's in a vehicle and the cooling system doesn't work. For that matter, can...

Re: A highly eclectic sailboat

It's alright for the Mediterranean, as long as it stays in harbor for the storms. That navigation position is nice. The helm spot is bad, and a few cameras and screens would improve it. The rig looks light on the mainsail and heavy on the job. Also, the topside will be a nightmare getting around whe...

Re: NASA Eyes Plan to Get Boeing Back on Track as SpaceX Alternative

They're rolling the SLS back to the VAB, because they can't load helium into something on an upper stage. That pretty much rules out March for launch.

Hopefully, there are some NASA administrators having tea and explaining things to Isaacman. Sans Jaffa cakes.
