Re: Happy birthday Bismarck
Tanks crews need handguns, so do boarding parties and who'd argue with the design that set all standards of a locked automatic pistol?

Re: The Difference Between Test and Reality....
I'll say, though, the reality of the SM-62 Snark was significantly better than that one test, with a test CEP larger than a continent. ...Ya miss a continent ONCE, and they never let you hear the end of it. Mike Small continent? And who wants to nuke Australia anyway. To get radioactive mutations o...

Re: The Difference Between Test and Reality....
How much did the British know about German submarine tactics by the end of 1941? I'm asking because the US submarine force was still drilled to use extreme caution. No raising of the periscope during the day, use (passive) sonar for targeting. At night the use of the periscope was ok but ofc stay su...

Re: The Difference Between Test and Reality....
You should have said: "Ours worked under some combination of circumstances."
Provided 2/3 of the problems had been identified. Or circumstances forced you to use it in a nominally suboptimal manner.

Re: The Difference Between Test and Reality....
Yes, but fortunately they didn't work so well during the Hunt for the Bismarck. Neither did FAA ship recognition and that could have ended with two RN CA own goals and Bismarck safe in Brest.
A really lucky case of reality hitting you in the face.

Re: Suggestions & Requests
I always keep my mod posts separate from comment posts and colour the former red, so that they stand out. A separate mod account may not be practical, as it would probably mean giving login details to more than one person for the same account. Yes, Mods do that when modding but with separate accoun...

Re: A study of stereoscopic rangefinders
Subs used rangefinders when submerged? I thought they used lines like in a hunting scope.Nik_SpeakerToCats wrote: ↑Sun Jan 18, 2026 9:15 am A thought: Given periscope constraints, wouldn't U-Boot range-finders be 'coincident' ??
The target is ID-ed as X, making it Y long, meaning Z length/height in lines translates to range A.

Re: Suggestions & Requests
Could we get a second account for Mods? One that they use that for official Mod work and Mod work only, while interacting as users with their ordinary user account. That way, one could easily distinguish between user opinion that can be ignored or even blocked and "official" Mod decisions,...
Re: Jokes
Imitation is the highest form of flattery. A Hungarian and a German MEP are talking in Brussels. "Hungary is by far the most democratic and free Member State, bar none!" says the Hungarian. "Don't make me laugh!" says the German. "Think about it! You can walk up to the stair...

A recently separated veteran gets a civilian job. He does a wonderful job, but there's only one problem: he always shows up late. So his boss takes him aside and asks him, "Weren't you in the military? What would your leadership say if you were late?" The veteran replies, "They'd say...

Monroe Crossing the Delaware
The well-known painting of Washington crossing the Delaware to bayonet a few Hessians in their sleep has James Monroe in the boat behind Washington, but Monroe and a small team were already inland. Leutze’s painting is glorious—and wrong in almost every detail. The river resembles the Rhine more th...

Re: 6.5x25mm CBJ and CBJ-MS
Also, like Ian notes in the video, CBJ is more of a small design firm than an ammunition/firearms manufacturer, so they want to partner with an ammunition manufacturer to bring their ammunition designs to the market. If anyone knows someone that fits that bill this has the potential to generate som...
